Boys & Girls Club of Alaska, Gold Pan Finalist 2011, Community Service

The annual Gold Pan Awards, sponsored by the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce are greatly coveted.

KACN Television was proud to help in this process by interviewing each 2011 finalist nominee and creating a series of profile videos.

This piece features Jennifer Brown, Director of Urban Clubhouses, for Boys and Girls Club of Alaska (http://www.bgcalaska.org/), discussing the history and growth of the organization.

Their Mission Statement: Empower and inspire the diverse youth of Alaska to realize their full potential by offering them hope, opportunity, and a safe environment.

They work towards this mission by encouraging youth to participate in community service. They also provide after school services include homework assistance, food, art, gym, and outdoor play.

This video features Gloria O’Neil, President & CEO of Cook Inlet Tribal Council (http://www.citci.com/) discussing how CITC embodies community service. It is the common thread in the over 100 programs they run to serve around 14,000 Alaskan Natives and American Indians.

One example she illustrates, is how they host over 500 athletes involved in the statewide Native Youth Olympics in Anchorage each year.

Alaska’s Learning Network, 2011 – Offers Quality Teachers to Tiny Rural Alaskan Highschools

Approiximately 120 high schools in Alaska have fewer than 20 students. For these schools, it is impossible to offer quality education in every subject students need.

Alaska’s Learning Network (www.AKLearn.net) offers online classes for taught by highly qualified, Alaska certified teachers, for students in grades 9-12.

Courses include English, Math, Science, History, Social Sciences, and World Languages.

Registration for fall classes generally begins in August. Go to www.aklearn.net to enroll.

KACN is Now in Girdwood on GCI Channel 95!

We are pleased to announce that as of today, KACN is being broadcast in Girdwood, Alaska.

In the spring of 2010, GCI Cable signed an agreement to buy Eyecom Inc.’s Girdwood cable television business.  This summer, GCI went hard to work replacing the old analog cable distribution system with more modern digital cable systems.

This has allowed GCI Cable to greatly expand the television stations offered in Girdwood.

As a result, as of today, September 14th, 2011, KACN Television is available in one more Alaskan Community, Girdwood!

KACN Television welcomes Girdwood to our growing community!
